If our 30’s came with a manual

I was catching up with one of my girlfriends yesterday and as we sat there chatting about everything under the sun, sipping the creamiest coconut milk lattes, she mentioned how in our 30s we can’t rely on the same reset button as we did in our 20s. This conversation sparked all sorts of thoughts because it couldn’t have been more true. When you turn 30 something changes and you can’t just seem to bounce back as quickly as you did in the past. Whether it’s recovering from a big night out or getting back to a routine after a holiday, things don’t come as easy as they did.

Personally for me turning 30 was the most sure and settled I have ever been. Physically and mentally I don’t think I have been in a better place before. This is mostly due to the sense of self awareness I had gained that allowed me to find balance in life by helping me focus on things that contribute to my overall wellbeing. Here are some of the things I have learned along the way that have helped me navigate this new decade with a happy and healthy heart!

Hydrate hydrate and then hydrate some more! Your skin, hair and body will all need extra hydration so listen to them. I started making small changes like drinking a litre of water before my first cup of coffee in the morning, using almond oil as a body moisturizer post shower and spending a little extra time on weekly hair masks.

Sleep in my personal opinion is the most important component when it comes to hormone health, weight loss and just our overall wellbeing. If you are not well rested then the rest of your body doesn’t keep up. As we get older we feel fatigued, have brain fog and are just always in a state of feeling tired. This is because the length and quality of our sleep is not adequate enough for our body to function. Switching off an hour before bedtime, trying to be in bed by 10pm and just using chamomile and lavender to help me unwind has done wonders for my sleep.

Listen to your gut. Take those probiotics, drink your kefir and kombucha and eat more whole foods. A healthy gut will help your skin, sleep, digestion, metabolism and so much more. Everything really does start in our gut and we should try and give it some extra TLC.

Daily movement is very important, not just for our physical wellbeing but also for our emotional wellbeing. Whether it’s a morning walk, a gentle yoga practice or a leisurely swim, it is extremely important to move and do something regularly. Often times we have a workout schedule in place and that’s all we do, however apart from that it is important to not be stuck at our desks and on the couch for long periods of time.

Lastly and most importantly don’t underestimate the power of good couch time with your friends. As we get older and our responsibilities start building up we don’t spend enough time just being. In school and college we see our friends everyday and have some kind of social interaction that doesn’t involve work, this unfortunately changes as time goes on. Something that I have come to appreciate more and more is just some good old quality couch time with my loved ones where I get to unwind and switch off.
